Teacher Organization Tools

When teachers think about stations and group work, they may assume there will be too much chaos and disorganization. We can't emphasize enough the importance of modeling, demonstration, structured stations, and systematic assessment.

After much trial and error, we created an organization chart as a tool for teachers to keep track of group/team progress, group members, and document completion of stations.

Each sheet is meant to be printed two-sided and kept in a folder.

The numbers on each sheet represent the class period, and the letters represent each group within that class. It is very helpful if you get gallon-size plastic zipper bags, and use a Sharpie to write the coordinating number (class period) and letter (group) on each bag. Have a student representative in each group carry around their bag with them to each station during each station cycle/day. At the end of the day, simply set up a bin at the front of the room where students can drop off their bag (exit tickets included).

During your planning or at the end of the school day, grab your Tracking Tool folder and make notes for each group/team based on the contents of their back. You can recycle the contents of their bag, or hand them back out if you prefer. We like to take the sheet out after bell work the following day and give a brief rundown of feedback on how each group performed.

You can also make a chart or graph on chart paper or large paper. This can serve as a visual for students. Traditional star stickers work well as tracking if you are implementing performance-based or behavior-based incentives.

  2. What are students putting in the gallon-size bags? Their completed work station assignments or work station materials? Thank you.
